Lightning

Just a little free verse poem I felt like putting up... I wrote this by flashlight from the unwanted shelter of my shed sometime in summer of 2004. That evening we had a brilliant display of lightning to go along with our wind and rain, and I spent quite a bit of time outside that night. I really needed an escape that night, so it felt like that storm was there just for me. Apart from sentimental value, the poem isn't really that good, but, surprisingly, it isn't angst-ridden. As a sidenote, I hate parts of my journal where I didn't bother to record anything because I was too messed up at the time.

Lightning
Lightning dances,
Just beyond my reach.
Wild and free,
Tauntingly
It plays across my dreams.
Thunder,
Lightning's twin,
Crashes all around,
The power and nerve
That runs beside its brother.
Rain,
My own twin,
Softly touches me,
Enveloping me in its arms,
Whispering comfort with its kiss.
I rest,
Listening and watching
As my friends come to sit with me.
I am grateful
For their sweet company.

I actually rewrote this and put it into my poetry packet almost two years later, so I guess I'll put that version here, too. I think this one is a bit better, but it has a pretty different tone. I should do a rewrite in the original tone sometime.

Storm
The midnight sky blazes to life,
white-burning lightning racing
across my vision.
The hushed air suddenly reverberates
as thunder envelops me, shaking
my insignificant frame.
My hot skin rejoices
as it feels the cool raindrops splash
into my red, swollen eyes
and mingle with my tears.

I like the first poem better than your revision. You sound happier in the first one, whereas some angst seems to play in the second. Lets see...I'm forgetting my poetry explication vocabulary, and can't properly say anything I want to...
I like the 'rain is your brother' and that thunder and lightning are twins. Very nice. :)

Great Poems! I feel the same way about rain.

I love rain and thunderstorms because they are a vision of raw power and elegant gracefulness. They are a testimony of God, I think. When I'm in a thunderstorm it reminds me that I'm small and weak. It also reminds me that there is a bigger picture, that there is a grandeur in heaven and that's more important than anything that's going on in the terrestrial. Thunderstorms make me feel like I'm seeing a glimpse of the celestial.

Are you going to put out a new post? I'd like to hear how your feelings toward college have changed. Or how praying in class feels. Or why you have a teddy bear as your picture. Or why you like cats. Anything but anime or Harry Potter or anything relating to modern Disney. If it's Bugs Bunny you want to talk about, I'm up for that. Or Marvin the Martian. He's so cool. Not as cool as Bugs, but still cool.

I was passing through your site today and I realized that I hadn't commented on your poems. So, sorry this took so long.
Anyway, I have to agree with Maren in saying that your first one is better than the second- everything in it seems natural and flowing, but the second one seems kind of forced. Plus, I have to consider the possibility that you are putting forth two different themes here. I am sick of english as it is, so I'm not going to analyze them deeply, but at the very least the tone changes dramatically.
I like storms. It's rained five days since I've been here and I love it. Nature is peculiar but always has grandeur in her actions, if you know where to look. Death, Love, and Nature. Those are the things of poetry. Word up.
